General Purpose:
Yale University seeks an enthusiastic, entrepreneurial and experienced leader for the position of Manager of the Instructional Systems Design team, a part of Yale’s central Academic IT Services group. He/She will have primary responsibility for a team of talented developers who are collectively the technical owners of academic application and web service portfolios. In addition to managing the life cycles of this robust portfolio of academic tools, the team manages a continual stream of exciting development projects for new applications, apps, sites, and services to support Yale’s academic mission.

The successful candidate will coordinate closely with AITS’ Instructional Technology Group to assess academic community needs, and vet, select and manage development projects across the full spectrum of teaching and learning technologies ranging from integration with existing proprietary and open source on-prem and cloud platforms to original custom coding of new applications from scratch.

Essential Responsibilities:
The Manger is responsible for the identification, development, integration, and improvement of instructional systems. The position assists functional sponsors in defining IT initiatives, developing business cases, and prioritizing workloads. This is both a hands-on role working with functional partners and developers on a daily basis as well as a leadership role, leading a team in work activities as well as career planning.
Collaborate with staff, faculty and IT Leadership to develop technology strategy and vision, and support all design, development and unit/integration/performance test/deployment activities associated with project and operational support work Manages and leads a diverse and creative team of academic media and instructional technology personnel Provides pedagogical and instructional design consultation for faculty and teaching staff which require assistance and support in developing online, hybrid, and Web-enhanced courses Act as functional owner for Yale’s institutional Course Management System, CLASSES*v2, and ensure that the underlying technology meets and anticipates existing and emerging needs for the support of teaching and learning.

Collaborate with Distance Education programs where there is overlap in the use of applications, content creation and online instruction by faculty with both distance and on campus student audiences.

Develop and maintain relationships with academic stakeholders, IT leaders, developers, and architects as required for operational support and to define and plan integrated solutions Accountable for completion of all work executed by team (on time, on budget, technical & functional requirements delivered, consistent cycle time, etc) Coordinate and coordinate with management of any distance education programs involving Yale faculty and instructional personnel to assure Coordinate all application releases, deployments and change control processes.
Establish academic production standards and develop production processes that reflect commercial practices.
Ensure compliance with the project management methodologies and the Project Management Office processes and standards, including release management, issue management, outage management and change control processes.

Work closely with the ISD Project Manager to create, communicate, and manage project plans and other required project documentation and provide updates as necessary. Improve the system availability, cost performance and manageability of the applications across their full lifecycle.
Manage software vendor relationships (where applicable) for support, technical strategy, maintenance and upgrades, and work with sourcing on contracts and agreements. Lead/direct team in work activities as well as career planning and professional development Advise, manage and mentor technical personnel.

Qualifications and experience:
This position requires a graduate (preferred) or post-doctoral degree in technology, distance education or a related field with seven or more years’ experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience leading application development, application operational support and IT project management Experience managing multiple, complex projects from design through deployment Proven ability to lead and prioritize multiple, urgent priorities simultaneously Ability to translate operational technical needs into complete, deliverable solutions and ensure client satisfaction Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, ranging from non-technical senior leadership to software developers and Operations staff Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to interface and influence at all levels in the organization Strong leadership presence, people management skills and communication skills Demonstrated competency in strategic thinking and leadership with strong relationship management skills High competency in project estimation, demand forecasting and budget management Demonstrated ability to lead effectively in a matrix environment
